Sandra Whiting is a painter living on Whidbey Island in Washington. She obtained her degree in Art (printmaking) from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1975. Since then she has shown her work extensively on both the east and west coasts of the US. Her work is held in numerous private and corporate collections.

Sandra has explored a variety of artistic techniques and incorporates elements of painting, printmaking, collage, and assemblage in her work. Using a variety of brushes, she applies intricate layers of acrylic paint onto wood panels and canvas. As she builds textures and dimension, she also scrapes away paint to expose buried colors and patterns. There is a certain excitement and element of surprise as the new levels are exposed. Like an archeologist during an excavation, she is never sure just what will be revealed. This type of approach to painting is more spontaneous. She doesn’t necessarily start with a preconceived idea. Instead, as the physical process occurs, certain images appear, and she continues to add or subtract paint until a cohesive idea emerges. Structures, architectural environments and interior spaces are prominent in her paintings, and many of the symbols and images originate from her unconscious.
